Waihi Beach is one of the best beaches for swimming in New Zealand. During the summer holiday period and other selected weekends, lifeguards patrol the beach using a system of flags, which swimmers should keep between.
You can surf anywhere along the 9km stretch of Waihi Beach. Orokawa Bay is only a 45-minute walk along the coast from Waihi Beach and is a great spot for experienced surfers.
Waihi Beach Surf Club organises competitions and events throughout the year. When surfing conditions are good, you can watch from the beach as boarders challenge the waves.
